Step 1: Deck Assessment

Step 2: Deep Cleaning and Prep

Deck preparation is more intensive than fence prep because of the buildup that accumulates on horizontal surfaces. We use professional-grade deck cleaning solutions combined with controlled pressure washing to remove ground-in dirt, food stains, grease, algae, mold, and old finish. For decks with heavy existing stain or paint, we may use a wood brightener after cleaning to restore the wood's natural pH and open the grain for optimal stain absorption.

Step 3: Adequate Drying Time

Deck boards are thicker than fence boards and take longer to dry after cleaning. We allow a minimum of 48 to 72 hours of drying time before stain application, depending on the weather and wood thickness. We use moisture meters to verify that the wood has reached the proper moisture content for staining. Rushing this step is the number one cause of premature stain failure on decks.

Step 4: Stain Application

For deck floors, we use a combination of roller and brush application to work the stain deep into the wood grain while maintaining even coverage across the flat surface. Railings, spindles, and stairs are treated with spray and brush techniques for complete coverage in tight areas. We apply the stain in manageable sections, maintaining a wet edge to prevent lap marks and ensure a uniform appearance across the entire deck surface.

Step 5: Quality Check and Care Instructions

After the stain has been applied, we inspect every board, railing section, and stair tread for consistency. Touch-ups are applied as needed. We then provide you with specific care instructions including when you can place furniture back on the deck, how long before full foot traffic is recommended, and a maintenance schedule to maximize the life of your stain.

Backyard Decks and Patios

Standard backyard decks are our most common deck staining projects. Whether your deck is a simple platform off the back door or an L-shaped design with built-in seating, we ensure complete, even coverage on every surface. We pay special attention to the areas around door thresholds and steps where foot traffic is heaviest and stain wears fastest.

Multilevel and Wraparound Decks

Larger deck structures require careful planning to maintain wet edges and consistent color across the entire surface. Our team has experience with complex deck layouts including multilevel designs, wraparound porches, and decks with built-in planters, benches, or pergola connections. We section the work strategically to achieve seamless results on every level and transition.

Pool Decks and Outdoor Entertainment Areas

Wooden pool decks and outdoor kitchen areas face additional challenges from chlorinated water, food and beverage spills, and heavy foot traffic. We select stains with enhanced water resistance and slip-resistant properties for these high-use areas. Our prep process includes removal of sunscreen residue, chlorine buildup, and grease stains that can prevent proper stain adhesion.

Pressure-Treated, Cedar, and Composite Decks

Most decks in Western Kentucky are built with pressure-treated pine, which requires specific staining techniques and timing. New pressure-treated lumber needs 30 to 60 days to dry before staining. Cedar decks benefit from transparent or semi-transparent stains that highlight the natural beauty of the grain. We also work with older composite deck surfaces that need refreshing, though composite staining requires different products and application methods.
